Large campus networks require scalable switching that can support high port density and growing traffic without frequent redesign. Fixed platforms can limit expansion and increase replacement costs. The HPE Aruba CX 6400 Series addresses this with modular chassis-based switching, allowing flexible scaling of ports and capacity within a single system.

They are deployed in aggregation and core layers connecting access switches and critical services. These switches support long-term network growth, reduce hardware churn, and maintain consistent performance as requirements change.

Designing & Supporting HPE Aruba CX 6400 Series Solutions

Backed by decades of expertise in the IT sector, our specialists support every stage of your deployment — from initial selection through to long-term lifecycle management.

  • Tailored Switch Selection: Our specialists evaluate your network environment from the ground up — port density, uplink requirements, PoE budgets, VLAN complexity, and throughput demands all considered before a recommendation is made. Whether you’re refreshing an office access layer, connecting a factory floor, or building out a data centre fabric, you get the right switch for your environment, not an over-engineered or underpowered compromise.
  • Deployment & Integration: Our engineers manage end-to-end switch installation and network integration — cabling infrastructure, stack configuration, inter-VLAN routing, and integration with existing firewalls, wireless controllers, and management platforms — fully configured and tested so your team inherits a working network from day one.
  • Network Visibility & Security: Choosing the right management software and licensing is critical to getting full value from your switching infrastructure. Our specialists help you identify the right vendor platform for your needs — covering network-wide visibility, switch management, security monitoring, and analytics and reporting.

  • Industrial & Harsh Environments: Our team has hands-on experience deploying managed switches in demanding conditions — production facilities, outdoor enclosures, transportation infrastructure, and sites with extreme temperature, vibration, or dust exposure. We specify and commission ruggedised switching hardware built to perform where standard office-grade equipment would not.
  • Data Centre & High-Density Switching: Our consultants provide specialist guidance on spine-leaf architectures, 25/100GbE deployments, low-latency fabrics, and ToR switching configurations — helping your team build scalable, resilient data centre networks without starting the design process from scratch.
  • Lifecycle Support & Management: We provide proactive switch monitoring, firmware management, and support packages built around your network infrastructure — with remote diagnostic capability and response times matched to the criticality of each environment, from a branch office to a production data centre.
  • Strategy & Roadmapping: Our consultants run structured sessions to assess your current network architecture, identify bottlenecks and risk, and produce a clear switching roadmap — whether you’re consolidating a multi-site estate, planning a data centre refresh, or introducing managed switching to an industrial environment for the first time.

HPE Aruba CX 6400 Series FAQ

What is the difference between the CX 6405 and CX 6410 within the HPE Aruba CX 6400 Series?

Both are modular chassis switches that accept interchangeable line modules, but they differ in physical size and port capacity. The CX 6405 is a 5-slot chassis, accepting up to five line modules. The CX 6410 is a 10-slot chassis, supporting up to ten. Both support the same range of line modules and speed options, so the choice is determined by how many ports the environment requires.

Does the HPE Aruba CX 6400 Series require a cloud subscription to operate?

No. Configuration, monitoring, and firmware updates are all available on-premises via CLI, web interface, and REST API without a cloud dependency. HPE Aruba Networking Central is optional and provides cloud-based visibility and AI-assisted insights across wired, wireless, and WAN. Organisations in regulated sectors where network management data cannot leave the site can operate the CX 6400 Series entirely on-premises.

What PoE capacity does the HPE Aruba CX 6400 Series support?

The CX 6400 Series supports PoE up to 90W per port depending on the line module selected. Using 60W PoE modules across both chassis sizes, the series can support up to 480 powered ports with a combined PoE budget of up to 28,880W. That is enough to power large numbers of Wi-Fi access points, IP cameras, and similar devices from a single chassis rather than across multiple separate switches.

How does the HPE Aruba CX 6400 Series deliver high availability?

VSX pairs two CX 6400 chassis so they appear as one logical switch, but each maintains its own independent control plane. If one chassis fails or needs a software update, the other continues running without dropping traffic. Line modules, power supplies, and fan trays are all hot-swappable, so hardware components can be replaced without taking the switch offline.

How is security enforced across the HPE Aruba CX 6400 Series?

Dynamic Segmentation applies access policies based on who or what is connecting, rather than just which port or VLAN a device is on. A device that moves around the network carries its policy with it. MACsec encryption is supported on select line modules, protecting traffic on the cable between switches. The built-in Network Analytics Engine can detect unusual behaviour and quarantine affected devices automatically.

Does the HPE Aruba CX 6400 Series require a software licence to operate?

A CX Foundation licence is included with every switch at no extra cost and covers core routing, switching, and management features. A CX Advanced licence is an optional upgrade that enables additional capabilities including enhanced analytics, deeper automation, and expanded Dynamic Segmentation features. Some capabilities shown in HPE documentation require the Advanced licence, so buyers should confirm which features they need before ordering.
