Enterprise Storage Configuration FAQ

What type of storage do I need for virtualisation?

Virtual environments need storage that stays fast under load — slow storage means slow VMs, and that affects everything running on them. All-flash platforms such as HPE Nimble AF-Series, HPE Alletra 5000 or Dell PowerStore are well suited here. For smaller or less critical environments, HPE MSA or Dell PowerVault ME5 offer reliable shared storage at a more accessible cost. The right fit depends on VM count, criticality and how much the environment is likely to grow.

What storage works best for databases and business applications?

Slow storage and slow databases go hand in hand — users feel it immediately. For mid-market SQL Server, Oracle or ERP environments, HPE Nimble AF-Series or Dell PowerStore 1200T strike the right balance of performance and cost. Larger or mission-critical deployments benefit from HPE Primera, HPE Alletra MP or Dell PowerMax, which are built to sustain consistent performance regardless of load. Getting this right has a direct impact on the experience of everyone using the system.

What is the difference between SAN and NAS?

SAN storage connects at a low level and behaves like a direct drive — used for virtual machines, databases and performance-sensitive applications. NAS connects over the network as a shared folder — suited to shared files, home drives, backups and media. Many organisations need both, and platforms such as Dell PowerStore or HPE Nimble can handle both from a single system. If you are unsure which your workload needs, we are happy to help you work through it.

Should I use a backup appliance or just add more storage?

General-purpose storage can hold backups, but it is rarely the most efficient way. Purpose-built appliances such as Dell PowerProtect DD or HPE StoreOnce shrink backup data dramatically as it arrives — in many environments reducing the space needed by 10 to 20 times. They also integrate directly with Veeam, Commvault and Veritas to speed up backup jobs and improve restore times. If backup windows are too long or restores are too slow, a dedicated appliance is usually a more cost-effective fix than simply buying more disk space.

Is tape storage still a sensible choice?

For the right use cases, yes — and it is often underestimated. Tape offers a very low cost per terabyte for long-term retention, and crucially it provides an air gap that disk-based systems cannot replicate: a copy of your data that ransomware cannot reach. HPE MSL libraries and Dell PowerVault ML3 automate the process and integrate with the backup platforms most organisations already use. If you have compliance obligations, large cold-data estates or want a genuine last line of defence, tape is worth proper consideration.

Can I expand my existing storage rather than replace it?

Often yes, and it can be the most cost-effective route. If your current array is performing well but running low on space, expansion enclosures let you grow capacity without disrupting the existing environment or retraining staff. HPE MSA, D3600 and D3700 enclosures and Dell PowerVault ME and MD expansion units connect directly to existing arrays. Where performance rather than capacity is the issue — or the platform is approaching end of support — a planned upgrade is usually the smarter long-term investment. We can help you assess which situation you are in.

How do HPE and Dell storage compare?

Both offer strong, well-supported portfolios that cover most business needs. HPE brings predictive analytics through InfoSight — useful for teams who want to spot issues before they become problems. Dell offers tight integration across its server and backup portfolio with a straightforward management experience. In practice, the best choice usually comes down to your existing estate and preferred vendor relationship. As a certified partner for both, we give you an honest comparison based on your situation — not a preference for one over the other.

How do I know if I’m buying the right amount of storage?

This is one of the most common concerns we hear — and one of the most important to get right. Too little causes performance and capacity problems; too much is budget tied up unnecessarily. Rather than leaving you to work through the numbers yourself, we size storage for you based on your actual workload, data growth and retention needs. It is part of every conversation we have before making a recommendation. If you would like to talk through your requirements before committing to anything, book a free consultation and we will work through it with you.

We’re not sure where to start — can you help?

Absolutely. Storage decisions involve more variables than most IT purchases — workload type, capacity planning, resilience requirements, existing infrastructure and budget all play a part. Many of our customers come to us without a clear brief and leave with a recommendation they feel confident in. If you would like to talk through your environment before looking at specific products, book a free consultation with one of our storage specialists — no obligation, no hard sell.
