The category divides into three groups. The CX 8400 (JL375A) is a modular 8-slot chassis for campus core and data centre core or spine-leaf roles. The CX 10000 and CX 10040 are DPU-enabled leaf switches that combine standard switching with built-in security services at the server edge. The CX 9300 and CX 9300S are high-capacity fixed spine switches for large-scale data centre fabrics at 100/400GbE speeds.

What security capability does the AMD Pensando DPU add to HPE Aruba Data Centre Switching leaf switches?

A standard switch moves traffic between servers but cannot inspect or filter it without routing traffic to a separate security appliance. The CX 10000 and CX 10040 include an AMD Pensando DPU that performs east-west firewalling, micro-segmentation, NAT, and encryption inline on every port. Internal traffic between servers no longer needs to travel to a centralised firewall for policy enforcement.

What is the difference between the CX9300-32D and CX9300S within HPE Aruba Data Centre Switching?

Both are fixed 1U spine switches with 100GbE and 400GbE connectivity. The CX9300-32D provides 25.6 Tbps with 32 ports configurable at 100GbE, 200GbE, or 400GbE — suited to the highest-throughput spine environments. The CX9300S provides 8 Tbps with 32 ports at 100GbE and 8 ports at 400GbE, offering a more cost-accessible path for environments transitioning server connections toward 400GbE fabric speeds.

What does the modular CX 8400 chassis offer in HPE Aruba Data Centre Switching that fixed switches do not?

The CX 8400 is an 8-slot chassis where line modules are purchased and installed separately, allowing port types and speeds to change without replacing the chassis. A single unit provides up to 19.2 Tbps across its slots. This suits environments that need a long hardware lifecycle or higher port density than a 1U fixed switch provides.

When does the CX10040-32 fit rather than the CX10000-48Y6C within HPE Aruba Data Centre Switching?

Both provide the same DPU-based security capabilities — east-west firewalling, micro-segmentation, and encryption inline. The CX10040-32 provides 8 Tbps with 32x100G and 6x400G ports; the CX10000-48Y6C provides 3.2 Tbps with 48x25G and 6x100G ports. The CX10040 suits environments where higher fabric throughput and 400GbE uplinks are required; the CX10000 suits access and leaf roles with 25G server connections.

Does HPE Aruba Data Centre Switching require cloud management, or can it run entirely on-premises?

All switches are fully manageable on-premises via CLI, REST API, and HPE Aruba Networking Fabric Composer, which handles fabric-wide provisioning without a cloud dependency. HPE Aruba Networking Central is optional. For the CX 10000 and CX 10040, the Pensando Policy and Services Manager provides on-premises management of DPU security functions independently of cloud services.
