Data protection requirements increase as organisations face stricter recovery targets and growing data volumes. Traditional backup processes can be slow and complex to manage. HPE Backup Appliances address this with integrated backup and recovery systems designed for reliable data protection and fast restore operations.

Within data protection environments, they reduce recovery time and simplify backup management — helping meet recovery objectives while lowering administrative overhead and reducing risk of data loss.

Designing & Supporting HPE Backup Appliance Solutions

Backed by decades of expertise in the IT sector, our specialists support every stage of your deployment — from initial selection through to long-term lifecycle management.

  • Tailored Storage Selection: Our specialists assess your full storage requirements before making a recommendation — capacity, performance, workload type, growth projections, and budget all factored in. Whether you need entry-level all-flash, midrange, or a disaggregated platform built around future scalability, you get a storage architecture matched to your environment, not an oversized or underpowered stopgap.
  • Data Protection & Ransomware Recovery: Selecting the right protection strategy is as important as the storage platform itself. Our specialists help you identify the right software, licensing, and infrastructure to deliver robust ransomware protection, rapid recovery, and the replication capabilities your business continuity plan demands.
  • Backup & Recovery: Reliable backup is only valuable if recovery is fast and predictable. Our team helps you choose the right combination of backup software, appliances, and licensing to meet your recovery time objectives — covering on-premises, hybrid, and cloud-integrated scenarios across your entire estate.

  • Long-Term Retention & Tape Archive: For organisations with compliance, regulatory, or cost-driven archiving requirements, our specialists help you evaluate and select the right long-term retention approach — including tape-based archive solutions that provide a cost-effective, air-gapped tier for data that needs to be kept but rarely accessed.
  • Scalability & Expansion: Storage needs change as your business grows. Our team helps you plan for capacity expansion and performance scaling from the outset — ensuring your chosen platform can grow alongside your requirements without costly rearchitecting down the line.
  • Lifecycle Support & Management: We provide proactive storage monitoring, firmware management, and support packages built around your infrastructure — with remote diagnostic capability and response times matched to the criticality of your data and workloads.
  • Strategy & Roadmapping: Our consultants run structured sessions to assess your current storage environment, identify risk and inefficiency, and produce a clear roadmap — whether you’re consolidating legacy infrastructure, planning a refresh, or building a storage strategy for the first time.

HPE Backup Appliance FAQ

Why deploy HPE StoreOnce as a dedicated backup appliance rather than directing backups to primary storage or cloud?

Backing up to primary storage means a ransomware attack or hardware failure can destroy both production data and the backups in the same event. Cloud-only backup avoids that, but recovery over a WAN connection can take hours or days for large datasets — which is impractical when a database or application needs to be back online quickly. HPE StoreOnce sits between these two problems: it is physically separate from primary storage, so a compromise of one does not automatically affect the other, and it is on-premises, so restores happen at local network speed rather than over an internet connection.

Our backup storage is growing faster than our data — why is that, and does HPE StoreOnce address it?

Most backup tools keep multiple full copies of data across retention periods, so the backup footprint grows as a multiple of the original data — not at the same rate. HPE StoreOnce deduplicates data before it is written, removing content that already exists from a previous backup job. In typical environments this reduces the physical backup storage required by up to 95%, so retaining 30 days of recovery points does not require 30 times the raw data capacity. That reduction also cuts the volume of data that needs to move to cloud for off-site copies, which lowers both bandwidth consumption and cloud storage costs.

How does HPE StoreOnce protect backup data from ransomware when the rest of the environment is compromised?

Ransomware frequently targets backup repositories specifically because destroying backups forces organisations to pay. HPE StoreOnce protects against this in two ways. First, backup data stored on HPE StoreOnce can be made immutable — meaning it cannot be overwritten, encrypted, or deleted for a defined retention period, even by an administrator account that has been compromised. Second, dual authorisation requires two separate authenticated approvals before any destructive action can be taken on the system, so a single stolen credential is not enough to wipe the backup environment.

Will HPE StoreOnce work with the backup software already in use, or does it require a change?

HPE StoreOnce integrates natively with Veeam, Commvault, Veritas NetBackup, and other major backup platforms through StoreOnce Catalyst — an interface built into the appliance. The existing backup software continues to manage schedules, policies, and retention; StoreOnce acts as the target. For Oracle, SAP HANA, and Microsoft SQL Server there are also no-cost application plug-ins that allow direct backup from the database to StoreOnce without routing through a backup server. No change to the backup application is required to start using HPE StoreOnce.

What is the difference between the HPE StoreOnce 3720, 3760, 5720, and 7700 in terms of which environments they suit?

The StoreOnce 3720 is sized for remote offices and smaller sites, starting at 18TB and scaling to 72TB locally. The StoreOnce 3760 suits mid-sized deployments, scaling from 108TB to 216TB. The StoreOnce 5720 is designed for enterprise data centres, scaling from 144TB to 576TB and handling up to 70TB of backup data per hour. The StoreOnce 7700 is all-flash and delivers up to 300TB per hour — it is suited to environments with the largest data volumes or the tightest recovery time requirements, where a disk-based appliance would not complete the backup window or restore quickly enough.

Can HPE StoreOnce extend backup copies to cloud storage without a separate gateway appliance?

Yes. HPE Cloud Bank Storage is built into all HPE StoreOnce appliances and tiers deduplicated backup data directly to object storage — including public cloud providers — without requiring a separate gateway device or virtual machine. Because data is sent in deduplicated form rather than as full copies, the volume transferred to cloud is a fraction of the original backup size. This makes long-term retention in cloud economically practical and gives organisations a geographically separate copy for disaster recovery without the cost of a second physical appliance at a remote site.
