Storage Optimisation Guide

This guide explains how to improve storage performance, capacity efficiency and workload placement using evidence from your existing environment.

What is a Storage Optimisation Assessment?

A Storage Optimisation Assessment reviews how storage capacity and performance are being consumed across an environment and identifies opportunities to use existing resources more effectively. It examines platforms, workload placement, utilisation, performance, growth patterns and inefficiently allocated capacity.

Who it’s for

Organisations facing storage growth, performance issues, rising costs or uneven utilisation, and teams under pressure to delay unnecessary expansion while maintaining service levels.

Common use cases

Virtualisation datastores Shared storage serving dense VM estates with mixed I/O patterns
Database storage Block storage supporting latency-sensitive transactional and analytical databases
VDI storage Storage used by virtual desktop environments with highly concurrent user activity
File & unstructured data NAS and scale-out storage holding shared files, engineering data or large datasets
Backup repositories Storage dedicated to backup, retention and recovery workloads
Mixed-tier storage estates Environments combining flash, hybrid, archive or multiple storage generations

Why Organisations Perform Storage Performance Reviews

Resolve storage constraints, use existing capacity more effectively and make better-informed expansion decisions.

Improve Storage Performance

Address latency, throughput or IOPS constraints that are affecting application performance and user experience.

Increase Capacity Utilisation

Make better use of allocated and physical capacity before committing to additional storage purchases.

Reduce Storage Costs

Remove waste, reclaim unused space and align data with storage suited to its value and performance needs.

Eliminate Bottlenecks

Find persistent constraints across arrays, hosts, networks or workloads that are limiting storage performance.

Improve Workload Placement

Match applications and data to the storage tier or platform that best fits their requirements.

Delay Unnecessary Expansion

Recover headroom and efficiency from the existing estate before adding new storage capacity.

Common Storage Challenges

Storage assessments commonly identify performance, capacity and visibility issues that can affect shared workloads and long-term platform efficiency.

Performance Bottlenecks

High latency, limited throughput or controller contention can reduce application responsiveness and affect shared workloads.

Poor Capacity Utilisation

Unused allocations, stale data or inefficient provisioning can leave substantial storage capacity unavailable for productive use.

Unbalanced Workloads

Demanding workloads may sit on unsuitable tiers or controllers, creating hotspots while other resources remain lightly used.

Excessive Storage Growth

Rapid data growth, snapshots, replicas or unmanaged retention can consume capacity faster than expected.

Legacy Storage Limits

Older arrays may limit performance, scalability, efficiency, interoperability or supportability beyond what configuration changes can resolve.

Limited Visibility

Insufficient monitoring or fragmented management data can obscure latency sources, capacity trends and emerging bottlenecks.

Storage Optimisation Assessment

01
Approach

Performance Assessment

Best suited to

Storage environments with latency, throughput issues or uneven workload performance.

Advantages
  • Identifies hotspots, contention and bottlenecks
  • Helps prioritise tuning or targeted upgrades
Considerations

Storage symptoms may originate from workload behaviour outside the array.

02
Approach

Capacity Assessment

Best suited to

Organisations facing rapid data growth, low free capacity or thin-provisioning risk.

Advantages
  • Quantifies usable capacity and consumption trends
  • Helps forecast expansion and avoid emergencies
Considerations

Logical and physical capacity can differ significantly.

03
Approach

Workload Placement Review

Best suited to

Mixed storage estates with workloads placed on unsuitable tiers or arrays.

Advantages
  • Matches workloads to appropriate storage resources
  • Improves utilisation and avoids premium overuse
Considerations

Placement decisions should consider peak behaviour, not averages.

04
Approach

Configuration Optimisation

Best suited to

Storage platforms with inconsistent settings, inefficient pools or configuration drift.

Advantages
  • Identifies tunable settings and standards
  • Can improve efficiency and operational consistency
Considerations

Some settings are workload-specific and affect resilience.

How Our Storage Optimisation Works

A structured six-stage process, from storage discovery and performance baselining through analysis, recommendations and a clear improvement plan.

Stage 01 Storage Discovery

We record the storage platforms in scope, expected growth, support status and known issues. This gives a clear picture of what the environment needs to deliver for your workloads and services.

Assessment Checklist

Before the assessment begins, we will ask you to provide the storage information, access and documentation needed for the review.

Storage Inventory

Provide an inventory of in-scope arrays, controllers, media, pools, volumes, file systems and software platforms, including model, firmware and location.

Workload & Capacity Data

Supply current usable and allocated capacity, growth trends, workload placement, data-reduction figures and workload characteristics for the storage in scope.

Performance Metrics

Provide latency, IOPS, throughput, queue-depth and utilisation metrics across representative normal and peak periods, where available.

Storage Platform Access

Arrange read-only access to storage management, monitoring and analytics platforms so live configuration, health, capacity and performance data can be reviewed.

Architecture & Connectivity Details

Supply diagrams showing host, storage and network or SAN connectivity, multipathing, replication relationships and dependencies with virtualisation, backup or data-protection platforms.

Growth Requirements

Document expected data growth, new workloads, consolidation plans, retention changes and performance requirements over the planning period.

Our Storage Assessment Best Practices

These principles guide how we assess storage performance, capacity use and optimisation priorities before recommending expansion.

Baseline Storage Performance

We establish workload-level baselines for latency, IOPS, throughput and controller utilisation so recommendations reflect measured storage behaviour.

Analyse Capacity Trends

We review used, allocated and forecast capacity over time to identify abnormal growth, thin-provisioning exposure and when physical expansion is genuinely needed.

Review Workload Placement

We compare workload performance, resilience and cost requirements with available storage tiers to identify misplacement and inefficient use of premium resources.

Assess Reclaimable Capacity

We identify abandoned volumes, snapshots, replicas and overallocated capacity to assess what can be safely reclaimed before expansion is recommended.

Correlate Storage Bottlenecks

We correlate array, host, fabric and workload telemetry to identify the component or dependency creating sustained storage constraints.

Optimise Before Expansion

We review configuration, workload placement, policies and data-efficiency opportunities first so new hardware is recommended only where optimisation cannot meet the requirement.

Storage Optimisation Guide FAQ

When is a storage optimisation assessment useful?

A storage optimisation assessment is useful when performance, capacity, cost or growth pressures raise questions about how well the current platform is being used.

It can help before adding capacity or replacing an array, and when teams need to distinguish a genuine shortage from reclaimable or poorly placed data. We review workload needs alongside storage behaviour to support an informed decision.

Do we really need more storage, or can we get more from what we already have?

We compare usable capacity, data growth, retention and workload requirements to identify whether optimisation can defer or reduce storage expansion.

The review looks for reclaimable space, over-allocation and data that may suit a different tier or retention policy. It also checks performance and resilience needs, so capacity is not reclaimed in ways that compromise service.

What is actually causing storage performance problems?

We correlate storage latency, throughput and IOPS with host, fabric and workload behaviour to locate the source of performance constraints.

A storage array is only one part of the data path. We examine where delays appear and whether they align with particular workloads or times, helping distinguish an array issue from host, network or configuration problems.

Are expensive storage tiers being used by the right workloads?

We compare workload performance needs and data access patterns with the storage tiers currently assigned to identify possible mismatches and cost inefficiencies.

Frequently accessed or latency-sensitive data may need faster storage, while less active data may not need the most expensive tier. We consider business and application requirements before recommending movement, so any change balances cost with service performance.

How much capacity can we safely reclaim?

We identify unused, duplicated or over-allocated capacity and assess it against retention, performance and resilience requirements before recommending safe reclamation.

The assessment does not treat all apparent spare space as available. We check workload dependencies and operational policies, then show which opportunities are low risk and which require validation or agreement from data owners.

Could the host or network be the reason storage appears slow?

Yes, host configuration, pathing or network congestion can create storage delays even when the storage array itself is operating normally.

We compare latency and I/O evidence across the host, fabric and storage system to locate where the delay occurs. This prevents investment in array upgrades when the constraint may sit elsewhere in the data path.

When will our current storage run out of usable capacity?

We use measured capacity growth, data reduction and planned workload changes to estimate when usable storage headroom may be exhausted.

The estimate depends on actual growth patterns and retention behaviour, so we make the assumptions visible. This helps your team decide when to expand, optimise or change data placement, with time to plan procurement and deployment.

Will the assessment disrupt live services, and what happens during it?

Most storage optimisation work uses telemetry, configuration and capacity reports, so live workloads can normally continue without planned downtime during the assessment.

We agree the data and access required before reviewing the environment. Any proposed change or test that could affect performance is discussed separately and scheduled with workload owners before implementation.

What will we be able to decide once the assessment is complete?

You will have evidence to compare optimisation, data movement, capacity expansion or platform refresh against performance, cost and resilience needs.

We explain the likely benefit and dependencies of each suitable option, rather than treating expansion as the default. Your team can use the findings to prioritise changes and plan storage investment around workload requirements.

Can Steel City Consulting help us act on the findings?

Yes, we can help plan storage changes, select and source compatible systems, implement improvements and review performance and capacity over time.

We can stay involved as recommendations move into design and delivery, checking that storage changes fit the host, network and application environment. Discuss your storage requirements with our team to explore the next step.
