Network Optimisation Guide

This guide explains how to identify what is limiting network and application performance so you can prioritise the changes that matter before adding unnecessary capacity.

What is a Network Optimisation Assessment?

A Network Optimisation Assessment analyses how an existing network is performing and where configuration, traffic handling or capacity can be improved. It reviews utilisation, latency, packet loss, congestion, routing, bandwidth, QoS, resilience and application traffic.

Who it’s for

Organisations with an established network that is seeing performance issues, inconsistent user experience, recurring congestion or growth that is putting pressure on existing capacity.

Common use cases

Cloud & SaaS traffic Microsoft 365, public-cloud and SaaS traffic across internet and WAN paths
Voice & video collaboration VoIP, Teams, Zoom and other real-time services sensitive to network conditions
Branch & SD-WAN networks Distributed site connectivity using multiple WAN links and application-aware routing
Data centre east-west traffic Server, storage and application traffic moving within data-centre fabrics
High-density campus networks Large user and device populations creating sustained demand across campus infrastructure
Latency-sensitive applications ERP, trading, manufacturing or database workloads affected by network delay

Why Organisations Perform Network Performance Reviews

Understand where network performance is limiting applications, resilience, capacity and future operational growth.

Improve Application Performance

Use network evidence to reduce connectivity issues that are affecting application response and user experience.

Reduce Latency & Congestion

Identify overloaded links, inefficient paths and packet loss that are delaying traffic across the network.

Improve Network Resilience

Strengthen path diversity, failover behaviour and availability across critical services to support more reliable operations.

Optimise Capacity Utilisation

Balance traffic and use available bandwidth more effectively before committing to additional network capacity.

Resolve Recurring Issues

Find the underlying network causes behind repeated incidents instead of repeatedly addressing the same symptoms.

Support Future Growth

Confirm the network can provide sufficient performance and capacity for more users, devices, applications and sites.

Common Network Challenges

Network assessments commonly identify performance, capacity and configuration issues that can affect application responsiveness and user experience.

Network Congestion

Sustained or peak traffic can exceed link capacity, causing queueing, inconsistent throughput and degraded performance.

Latency & Packet Loss

Delay, dropped packets, interface errors or unstable paths can reduce responsiveness and affect real-time services.

Inefficient Traffic Flows

Suboptimal routing, unnecessary hops or poor path selection can increase latency across congested or distant infrastructure.

Capacity Constraints

WAN, LAN, uplink or inter-site bandwidth may lack headroom for peaks, new applications or rising data volumes.

Configuration Issues

Incorrect QoS, routing, switching, MTU or interface settings can create avoidable performance problems despite adequate hardware capacity.

Application Performance Issues

Latency, loss, DNS, path or bandwidth issues may contribute to slow applications beyond server-side monitoring.

Average utilisation can hide microbursts and peak congestion.

How Our Network Optimisation Guide Works

The engagement follows a structured six-stage process, from baseline performance review through analysis, optimisation and validation.

Stage 01 Performance Baseline

We record current response times, traffic loss and congestion during representative periods, giving a clear starting point for the services in scope. This baseline makes it possible to judge later changes against measured performance rather than assumption.

Assessment Checklist

Before the assessment begins, we will ask you to provide, share or arrange the network information, access and documentation needed for the review.

Network Topology

Provide current topology diagrams covering core, distribution, access, WAN, internet, data-centre and major inter-site paths, with bandwidth and redundancy where known.

Device Configurations

Supply current configuration backups for in-scope routers, switches, controllers and related devices.

Monitoring & Telemetry Access

Arrange read-only access to monitoring, flow, telemetry and management systems that show performance, congestion, errors and availability over time.

Traffic & Utilisation Data

Share traffic, utilisation, latency, jitter, packet loss, retransmissions, interface errors and flow data for representative normal and peak business periods.

Application Requirements

Document the performance needs of business-critical applications, voice, video, cloud and data flows, including known user-impact symptoms.

Performance Baselines

Provide any existing network-performance baselines, service-level targets or previous test results so current conditions can be compared appropriately.

Our Network Assessment Best Practices

These principles guide how we assess network performance, traffic behaviour and capacity so recommendations are based on measured conditions and validated outcomes.

Establish a Performance Baseline

We record latency, jitter, packet loss, utilisation and application response before recommending changes so later comparisons can be made against measured conditions.

Analyse Traffic Patterns

We review traffic by source, destination, application, site and time period to understand which flows use bandwidth and when demand changes.

Identify Bottlenecks and Root Causes

We correlate sustained utilisation, errors, retransmissions and latency to determine where local constraints are developing into service-impacting network issues.

Review Routing and Traffic Flow

We assess routing paths, QoS, load balancing and traffic engineering to see whether important applications use appropriate paths and available bandwidth effectively.

Assess Capacity Headroom

We calculate link, device and service headroom against peak demand, failover and expected growth rather than relying on average utilisation alone.

Validate Changes After Implementation

We compare expected outcomes with baseline and post-change telemetry so recommendations can be checked against measurable performance improvement.

Assessment Deliverables

Following the assessment, you receive documented network findings, analysis, recommendations and next steps based on the performance areas reviewed.

Network Optimisation Guide FAQ

When should we assess network performance?

A network optimisation assessment is useful when applications perform poorly, congestion recurs or teams need to improve capacity before buying more hardware.

It helps when the network remains available but users experience latency, dropped sessions or inconsistent application response. We examine traffic and configuration evidence to find where changes could improve performance or resilience.

Why are applications slow when network devices show no outage?

A network can remain online while latency, packet loss, congestion or routing inefficiencies make applications slow or unreliable for users.

We compare application symptoms with link utilisation, errors, paths and device performance to locate delays. This helps determine whether the issue is local, affects a particular route or reflects a broader capacity or configuration problem.

Where is congestion happening and what is causing it?

We review utilisation, traffic patterns, interface errors and timing to identify congested links and the conditions creating pressure across the network.

Average use can hide short peaks that affect users or critical applications. We compare busy periods with network paths and traffic sources, then explain whether the likely response is traffic management, configuration change or added capacity.

Are network routes adding unnecessary delay to our applications?

We compare intended and actual traffic paths, routing preferences and failover behaviour to find inefficient or unstable routes between key systems.

Unnecessary hops, backhaul or poor route selection can add delay even when links are not full. The review shows where routing changes may improve application paths and flags dependencies that should be checked before changes are made.

Are voice, video or other critical applications getting the priority they need?

We review quality-of-service policies and traffic behaviour to see whether critical applications receive appropriate priority during congestion and peak demand.

We check policy configuration against actual traffic and business requirements, including voice, video and other latency-sensitive services. This helps identify mismatches that may cause quality problems and informs changes to prioritisation or capacity.

Will the network have enough spare capacity for growth and failover?

We compare current and peak utilisation with expected growth and the additional load that may shift onto links during failover.

A network can have sufficient capacity in normal operation yet become constrained when a link or device fails. We identify where headroom is limited and whether growth, resilience changes or traffic shifts need to be planned.

Can we improve performance without buying new network hardware?

Often, performance can improve through routing, quality-of-service or configuration changes, but the assessment first checks whether capacity is sufficient to avoid unnecessary hardware purchases.

We look for avoidable congestion, inefficient paths, policy issues and underused existing capacity. If those changes are unlikely to meet requirements, we explain where equipment or link upgrades would provide a measurable benefit.

Will the assessment disrupt live services, and what happens during it?

Most optimisation analysis uses monitoring, traffic and configuration data, so it does not require changes to live network services or configurations.

We agree the data and access needed with your team before reviewing the environment. Any proposed tests or configuration changes are discussed separately and scheduled with service owners before implementation.

What will we be able to decide once the assessment is complete?

You will have a prioritised view of performance causes and options, including configuration changes, traffic management or capacity investment, with a recommended sequence.

We explain which improvements are likely to address user impact and what dependencies or risks each involves. Your team can use the findings to sequence network changes and compare operational benefit with cost.

Can Steel City Consulting help us act on the findings?

Yes, we can help design and implement agreed network improvements, source compatible equipment and review performance as requirements change in your environment.

We can work with your team to move from analysis into a controlled change plan, validating that proposed changes fit the wider network. Discuss your network performance with our team and we can explore what to address first.
